  • Position Overview


    The role of the R&D Manager is to oversee the ongoing efforts of our development teams. The Manager is expected to perpetuate collaboration, transparency and innovation among our team members. The Manager is also expected to push for quality, efficiency and agility while supporting product owners to ensure development deliverables are completed on time and on budget.


    This is a hybrid business / technical position and requires a strong blend of management and project management skills, financial savvy, superior communication skills, and proficiency in the agile mindset. As the R&D Manager, the ideal candidate will be responsible for inspiring a diverse team of developers, and guiding and supporting them in various phases of R&D development activities. 


    The Manager of R&D can enjoy working working from home remotely, or out of the NorthStar head office in Ottawa, Ontario; which is also the head office of Harris Computer!

    Primary Functions

    • Manage, guide and coach your team of 8-10 people
    • Focus on the professional development of each individual in your team
    • Collaborate with all departments to ensure team priorities are in line with the business goals of the company
    • Assist with and manage iterative technical execution through product owners and teams, advocating collaborative solution discovery
    • Manage cost estimation and delivery efforts for customer projects
    • Prioritize and manage multiple projects with overlapping deadlines
    • Suggest training tools to enhance employee performance and development
    • Work with fellow R&D leaders to define / refine departmental processes
    • Contribute to the technical and product vision of the company


    • 10+ years of software development experience (desktop, mobile and/or web applications)
    • 5+ years of leadership experience (e.g., Development Lead, Project Manager, Development Manager, etc.)
    • Strongly principled in SDLC best practices
    • Ability to translate Product Requirements into Technical Requirements
    • Experience with Agile and Scrum
    • Experience with giving performance reviews
    • Experience with professional development strategy and implementation
    • Experience with solution design and architecture
    • Experience with user experience best practices
