Our SmartWorks Connect consumer engagement portal offers sophisticated functionality that helps utilities demonstrate the value of their smart grid investments to customers.


We are looking for a Quality Assurance Engineer to join our dynamic team of smart, positive, and passionate people who are appreciated for their unique talents and empowered to do their jobs well. The ideal candidate will take a lead role on the implementation and extension of our ambitious QA roadmap. You can design, create, execute, and analyze automated and manual software tests, and implement tools and procedures to continue to build and improve our QA processes. In this position, you will work as part of the Research and Development team to instill high standards of quality and ensure ongoing improvement of our QA processes.


Our head office is located in Ottawa, ON, however most of our management and staff work remotely from their homes. This position is open to qualified individuals living anywhere in the US or Canada and willing to work remotely from home and to travel on occasion.

Primary Functions

  •  Development and maintenance of automated unit test suites.
  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of our QA infrastructure including test instances, continuous build servers, and source control.
  • Performing bug fixes and other source code maintenance tasks.
  • Designing testing plans and strategies for different types of testing including: automated unit tests, user interface testing, performance testing, integration testing and regression testing.
  • Participating in all phases of the SDLC, including analysis, design, validation, estimation and more
  • Designing and implementing testing strategies for the broad range of our products including: automated unit tests, user interface testing, performance testing, integration testing and regression testing
  • Evaluating, recommending and configuring QA tools and frameworks as well as analyzing customer support issues escalated to R&D to determine if a product defect exists.the R&D team
  • Assist in implementing quality assurance processes.
  • Analyze, Evaluating, recommending and configuring QA tools to be used for quality assurance.
  • Programming of build and packaging scripts.
  • Collecting metrics to measure evaluate the quality of our products over time.
  • Promoting best practices to ensure quality within the development team to ensure high quality


To meet this challenge you must possess a high level of initiative and energy as required to succeed in a fast-paced team environment, as well as the following skills:


As a Quality Assurance Engineer, you have

  • 3-5 years of business experience in a software quality assurance role; test case generation and execution.
  • Experience working with Oracle or experience testing database centric business logic in a Linux environment and or PL/SQL.
  • Experience working with SQL.
  • Experience with automated, mocking and/or coverage tools and frameworks such as Selenium, Mockito, EasyMock, or Cobertura.
  • Experience with WEB UI testing.
  • Ability to program in JAVA.
  • University degree (preferred) or college diploma in computer sciences, software engineering, computer science, or a related field.

Preferably, you also have

  • Experience working in a Linux environment.
  • Experience with build automation and packaging would be an asset.
  • Experience building and testing web based UI with JSPs and JQuery would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of JSON, Bootstrap, PostgreSQLgres, PL/SQL, XML, SOAP and/or H2 would be an asset.
  • Demonstrate excellent  verbal and written communication skills in English are a requirement.
  • Can Ability to work independently, but most importantly, as a team player.
